Do you have to or do you get to...
I remember the day like it was yesterday...The day my whole mentality changed. It was early 2017 when a beautiful young lady named Amy, came to speak to a group of us about what her life looked like after suffering from sepsis and losing her arms and legs.
I sat at the church as she spoke, in awe of her. She was glowing, thriving, grateful and full of love and I thought to myself...how does she hold a glass, brush her hair, and feed her young children and have the courage to keep going? It hit me...the very things I did everyday, like drive my kids to school, brush my hair, put on my makeup, make my kids lunches...Amy was just hoping to be able to do again.
Amy opened my eyes to all the "Get To" moments in my day and from that day forward, I changed my mindset. My everyday tasks that I would have sometimes complained about by saying “I have to” quickly switched to "I get to" tasks in my day. And since then, this switch in my mindset from “have to” to “get to” has been an everyday gift that helps me live in gratitude. So, we have a choice everyday when the sun rises… do you have to or do you get to?
